Spinning® is ENERGY
Spinning®, The Ultimate Mind and Body Workout
Spinning® was created by world-class cyclist "Jonny G." Goldberg as a convenient and quick way to train for races during off season and from his own garage. In 1989, he and John Baudhuin opened the first Spinning center in Santa Monica, California and then developed a program to certify other Spinning® instructors, creating The Spinning® Program. It is now owned and operated by Mad Dogg Athletics and has become a world-wide phenomenon in the world of fitness.
SPINNING® is basically an aerobics class set to music, with participants riding specialized "Spinning" exercise bikes. Spinning has become a very popular form of exercise over the last 10 years for athletes, fitness enthusiast, pro cyclers and those looking for a low impact, safe cardiovascular exercise. Unlike a regular exercise bike workout, Spinning® involves a variety of movements and speeds, positions of sometimes standing on the pedals and other times sitting in the saddle. You will pedal at top speed, climb with heavier resistance, and other times, recover at a slower pace. Unlike most modern exercise bikes, the Spinner has a large flywheel in the front, an adjustable seat, seat post, and handlebars. When done correctly, Spinning® has the potential of burning more calories in less time than any other cardio machine you see on a typical gym floor. Most Spinning workouts average 45-60 minutes, with movements synchronized to the music soundtrack that sets the pace. Spinning is for everyone and one of the best ways to strengthen your heart and gain cardiovascular health.
A Typical Spin Class: As you pedal, motivating, heart thumping music plays and the instructor coaches you through a visualization of an outdoor cycling workout: You may hear motivation such as "Feel the Elevation as you add resistance, climb with control and surround yourself with the music, close your eyes and BREATHE.…you are victorious and we will make it to the top of this hill....FOCUS" During the class, your pace will vary depending on your resistance and the Energy Zone (see more on on this site page titled Fitness NRG Zones). There are 3 hand positions in the Spinning program, hand position 1 for a seated flat (light resistance), hand position 2 for saddle work, with or without resistance, and for standing runs or flats. Hand position 3 is for standing climbs only and requires heavier resistance and a smooth transition into a squat like position hovering over the handlebars. There is a proper set up for each individual, but the Instructor is trained to do that for you. If the instructor is creative with their music and profiles, fun and continues to inspire you, you'll be sure to go back for more. Spinning® is the ultimate workout to help you focus inwardly and work on your mind as well as your body.
Why I love it: It's just so FUN and it makes me feel GREAT! First of all, I love music and with Spinning, you get to hear all kinds of music and move to it too. Spinning® allows you to slip away for a while and into your own zone, creating a mind and body connection. As a bonus, it burns serious calories (between 400 - 800 calories per session, depending on the Energy Zone and your resistance) and offers awesome aerobic and anaerobic workouts that get your heart pumping. It tones your quadriceps (front thigh muscles) and the outer thigh muscles like nobody's business! It works your core as you learn to maintain good balance in standing positions, giving you greater balance in everything you do. It's always your ride in the a Spin class. There is no competition and you control your intensity and pace. You can finish a Spin class, regardless of your fitness level, simply by adjusting your pace or the tension knob on the bike. If you haven't tried Spinning®, give it a whirl, you won't regret it. In fact, I'd bet it will become your newest love and addiction. Want to feel good and look good too? Want to build your strength and a healthy heart? Try a spin class at least 3 times and let me know what you think. I say SPIN 4 LIFE!
